The Home Affairs Ministry has submitted the Maltese Citizenship (Amendment) Bill for first reading.
The proposed amendments are intended to align Malta’s citizenship laws to EU legislation in the wake of the judgement that the Court of Justice of the European Union had pronounced a few months back.
Within hours of the judgement, the Maltese Government had issued its reaction confirming that the judgement would be respected but also pledged that the legal implications would be studied in detail, so that the regulatory framework on citizenship could then be brought in line with the principles outlined in the judgment.
This marks the very first step in amending the legislation and ensure compliance with the European Court’s judgement. The details of the proposed amendments are not yet made public, as is standard procedure with regards to first readings in Parliament. But more details and information are expected to be issued within the coming weeks.
This is extremely good news for those individuals who hold a genuine interest in obtaining Maltese nationality for themselves and their family members and we will be keeping abreast with developments as they happen.
