Malta Aircraft Registry Surpasses 900 Registered Aircraft

As of October 2024, Malta's Aircraft Registry has surpassed 900 registered aircraft, feat that was reiterated once again during the Deloitte Malta Aviation Conference 2025 held in April.

This is a significant milestone that reinforces Malta’s stature as one of the fastest-growing aircraft registries in Europe. In fact, industry experts indicate that this reflects a trend of approximately 10% annual growth leading to the number of aircraft currently flying under the Malta flag being twice as many 5 years ago.  This accomplishment highlights the effectiveness of Malta’s aviation policies and the attractiveness of its registration framework for aircraft owners and operators worldwide.

The 9H Register, as the Malta Aircraft Registry is known, was launched in 2006.  Since its inception, it has aimed to provide a modern and efficient registration process for aircraft owners while adhering to international safety and regulatory standards.

Ranked among the top 10 registries in the world, the 9H Register boasts a diverse fleet:

  • Private jets: Catering to high-net-worth individuals and corporate clients.
  • Commercial aircraft: Utilized by airlines for both passenger and cargo transport.
  • Helicopters: Employed in sectors like tourism, emergency services, and offshore operations.

This diversity contributes to Malta’s reputation as a comprehensive aviation hub.

Malta offers several competitive tax benefits, including

  • Exemptions from Value Added Tax (VAT) under specific conditions for aircraft used in international operations.
  • A favourable tax regime for aircraft leasing, making it appealing for global businesses.

These financial advantages make Malta an attractive option for aircraft owners looking to optimize their costs.

The success that the Maltese Aircraft Registry has experienced is a testament to the country’s strategic initiatives in aviation regulation and its appeal as a registration hub. With ongoing growth, Malta continues to enhance its infrastructure and regulatory environment, ensuring it remains a top choice for aircraft owners and operators globally.
